Uther Pendragon was not known as a benevolent king. He persecuted innocent people and killed defenseless women and children simply because they possessed magical abilities, and refused to be challenged.
Considering all the things that Uther has done to his kind, and that Arthur seeks to continue his father’s work, and that Morgana, who has equal if not more right to the throne than Arthur, simply seeks what is rightfully hers and wants to restore magic to the kingdom, Merlin is fighting for the wrong side.
